Common signs and symptoms in your newborn

Head

Molding: a temporary asymmetry of the skull resulting from the birth process.  A normal head shape is usually regained within 1 week.

Caput: a diffuse edematous swelling of the soft tissues of the scalp.  Usually, it resolves within several days.

Cephalhematoma: a soft lump on one side of the head.  It is due to a collection of blood on the outer surface of the skull.  It usually resolves in 3-4 months.

Milia: a rash in which tiny retention cysts are seen. This whitish pin-head sized rash occurs on nose, chin, forehead and cheeks.  They usually disappears within a few weeks of birth.

Body

Lanugo: fine hair on baby's face, shoulders and back.  They disappear after several days to weeks.

Erythema toxicum: numerous small red areas of skin with a yellow or white pimple like lesion in the middle.  It can appear from 48 hours after birth till about 10 days.  This harmless rash resolves by itself.

Mongolian spot: are dark blue or greenish spots usually located over the lower back and buttocks.  They may disappear by 4 years old.

Limbs & Spine

Club foot: foot is turned downward and inward, and the sole is directed inward. If the position can be corrected with a gentle force, it will resolve spontaneously.  If not, orthopaedic treatment and follow-up may be necessary.
