S'PORE FIRM POISED TO MAKE MEDICAL HISTORY
------------------------------------------
A LOCAL research and development company is on the verge of a major
medical breakthrough.

Rockeby Biomed Ltd, a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of fungal
infection, announced yesterday that one of its diagnostic kits could lower
the mortality rate for premature babies.

Called SysCan3, the kit is currently undergoing a two-year trial at 16
major American research hospitals.

At the invitation of the United States' National Institute of Child Health
and Human Development, Rockeby is working closely with Duke University to
conduct the study, in which 1,750 infants are expected to participate.

The kit, developed in 2001 and used to treat only adults to date, is
targeted at detecting fungal infections in babies born less than 28 weeks
into the pregnancy and weighing under one kilogram.

In Singapore, 10 per cent of all births are premature, with one in 100
being born before the 28th week.

Currently, infected babies are treated by extracting 5ml of blood to
conduct culture tests. This, said Dr Low Kah Tzay, a paediatrician at
Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre, is "difficult and results take up to a
week to arrive". One in five such babies die, many as a direct result of
infection.

With SysCan3, only 1ml of blood is required and a diagnosis is available
within three hours. Tests are done at hospitals and private pathology
laboratories. - Lee U-Wen (Today)
